Game Fun

Game Fun

The word "fun" is just another word for learning. Being in a flow state is how we make something "fun".

There are eight kinds of fun, they are:
  • Sensation: The part of a game that uses our sense, the look, feel and audio. They engage our senses and make us have "fun"
  • Fantasy: Games can create a make believe world that is far more interesting than our standard day to day life.
  • Narrative: A narrative in a game keeps the player engaged in the story.
  • Challenge: A game that has tasks that become increasingly difficult keeps the player learning and therefore having fun.
  • Fellowship: If a game is very social the mechanics and and boring decisions don't matter as much as people will play it for a social interaction. People who play make it fun.
  • Discovery: Very rarely seen in board games. It adds adventure and mystery to a game to keep the player engaged.
  • Expression: Some games like Dungeons and Dragons for example, allow the player to create their own personal experience, their decisions are based on their personal ideas. They can continue to explore their character and express themselves through it.
  • Submission: This is when a game is an ongoing hobby, not just whenever you feel like playing. For example if you play World of Warcraft then you may play with your guild on a set time and day once a week.

The second reading I read wad called Natural Funativity written by Noah Falstein.
In this reading he talked about how he believes there's no difference between education and entertainment.

As humans we have a survival instinct buried into us, not just humans all animals for that matter. Puppies and kittens play fight, by doing this they are practising their instinct to fight/hunt without a second thought. They are learning skills they once needed for survival.

So as humans we too want to subconsciously practise survival skills through playing.

I think both make sense but I don't completely agree with Noah Falstein. Survival wasn't something done for fun, sure its great to play a survival game but only because it's not realistic. I don't agree that we play games because of this "instinct".
I did find it an interesting read though.

Also I enjoyed reading about the specific types of "fun" broken down into easy and rememberable format. I once again know more about gaming and what to do to make it fun and a "good" game.
