Unity Free Tutorials 02

Image
Unity Tutorial This week I decided to branch out from Jimmy Vegas. I knew that I needed a timer in my game so I look up "how to make a timer in unity" this video was one of the shortest ones.  I like Jimmy and he's great at explaining stuff butt his videos can drag on a bit. But this guy stuck to the point and it was very easy to follow. It's a pretty basic timer and so is the score I made but it's fine for the prototype. I liked this tutorial by N3K EN and I will definetly look out for their videos when looking for tutorials.

Game Stories

Image
Game Stories The first reading discussed games being considered an art form. It is a highly debated statement but the conclusion is that some games, if not all are art. Art is an expression of a persons creativity and appreciated for their beauty. Games aren't always considered "beautiful" though but they are an expression of creativity and some have stunning graphics. We are just too distracted by the "fun" of a game to appreciate it's artistic value/beauty. https://learn.canvas.net/courses/3/pages/level-8-introduction-and-readings?module_item_id=44573 https://learn.canvas.net/courses/3/pages/level-8-dot-1-six-layers-of-art?module_item_id=44575 The next reading was all about the story behind a game. For the last few weeks we've been reading about mechanics of games and how to make a game "fun". We hadn't discussed the aesthetic value of the game nor the story line. As humans we love stories and Myth's. For thou

Week 8 Progress

Image
Progress I am happy with my progress so far. I am a few points behind due to missing a reading in the first few weeks and then I hadn't correctly done the declarations for comments. I discovered this a few weeks back when I had 132 points out of 150 points, II was confused so I looked back and saw I hadn't done declarations correctly. I did extra credit the following week for 6 points and I intend to do extra credit again to get the points that I missed.  I find blogging about what we read and do very useful. I am in a way forced to do something within the deadline and because the days are always the same (bar this week) I have got into a routine. I dread weekends because I leave it all until Sunday and I end up ruining my evening, but I enjoy working on my project and reading other peoples blogs. I do dread having to comments on other peoples blogs I always struggle to meet the word count. I also feel really fake and I'm just kind of saying the same thing

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
Comments and Feedback I think the feedback from other students is great. It's good to hear other peoples opinions on your work. I also just enjoy reading them. Although I enjoy hearing suggestions sometimes they're a bit too late, for example after I finished my GDD I got feedback suggesting I do different things but I had already figured out what I was doing. I found it very useful when choosing my game though because I hadn't set anything in stone yet. Though a lot of what people suggest to me is quite unrealistic to make in the time frame and skill set I have. I think some of my feedback may be useful but like I said before they've already made their decisions so me suggesting that they add more or change things in their game seems a bit harsh to me. I usually just ask questions in my feedback on anything I'm unclear about, I do think this is more helpful than me suggesting they add another ten levels. It means they can see what they were unc

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
Reading and Writing Review I find the reading assignments a bit long winded sometimes and I tend to lose focus the longer I'm reading it unless it's a topic I find interesting. I enjoyed the first few reading we did on growth mindset and time strategies, probably because they were new concepts to me and they were things that I could apply to my everyday life.  I do like learning about the game ones but I find them very long and I tend to zone out on what I'm reading. Some of the writing keeps me more captivated than others. I have learnt from the readings about games and I do think of them when I play games now and what makes a game "fun". I don't really feel like I've learnt anything new form the readings about Games since the first few, I think they've all been pretty similar so I tend to zone out from them. I used to read everything and then write my blog but I found that I forgot a lot of what I read so I started to write notes

Prototype

Image
Prototype I began to make my terrain for my game. I used the same assets that Jimmy Vegas used for the forest for my game. I just made the trees taller. I used the same scripts I had already made in previous unity tutorials. to collect an object, making a score. I used a gem in the mean time to collect but I will look up how to design objects for unity. I had to follow the tutorials again. I had forgotten a lot of the basics as I hadn't designed anything since the first few videos. It took me a minute to remember how to change the height of the trees.  I left my character as first person controller for now as I haven't designed a tree character yet. I aim to do this on my next tutorial. There was an error somewhere in my code, I am not sure where though so I will revise all the videos I followed and go over my scripts before I continue to build my prototype. Unity Screenshot

Unity Free Tutorials

Unity Tutorial 06 For my game I am planning on having a score system in place. I originally found a video but it didn't use C# script but then I found a Jimmy Vegas video that showed me how using C# script. I was glad that I found a Jimmy Vegas tutorial because I think he's really clear and I understand what he is doing, he doesn't go through things too fast. I normally get lost following tutorials when they just assume you know stuff and don't tell you what they did. Jimmy Vegas always says what he is doing. I was able to successfully make a score counter thanks to Jimmy Vegas. I will use this in my game. I will look for more Jimmy Vegas tutorials to follow in the future. Next week I plan on making a scoreboard. I found this tutorial very easy to follow. This is the video I followed for my tutorial. Score

Game Fun

Image
Game Fun The word "fun" is just another word for learning. Being in a flow state is how we make something "fun". There are eight kinds of fun, they are: Sensation : The part of a game that uses our sense, the look, feel and audio. They engage our senses and make us have "fun" Fantasy : Games can create a make believe world that is far more interesting than our standard day to day life. Narrative : A narrative in a game keeps the player engaged in the story. Challenge : A game that has tasks that become increasingly difficult keeps the player learning and therefore having fun. Fellowship : If a game is very social the mechanics and and boring decisions don't matter as much as people will play it for a social interaction. People who play make it fun. Discovery : Very rarely seen in board games. It adds adventure and mystery to a game to keep the player engaged. Expression : Some games like Dungeons and Dragons for example, allow the p

Final GDD

Image
Final GDD I  found it hard to talk about my game in depth. The examples I read were all for really complex games and mine is pretty simple in comparison so I wasn't sure how some of the headings would be relevant to my game. My Game GDD has definitely improved from last week, I hope that when reading it you know exactly what my game is and how to play it. After reading comments on my GDD from last week I have decided to keep the name Pollution Dilution  Screenshot of My GDD My DunDoc

Growth Mindset - Learning By H.E.A.R.T

Image
Learning By H.E.A.R.T HEART stands for  Happiness/Health-Empathy-Attention-Reading-Time. I read Laura Gibbs article called "When Your Brain Doesn't Sleep". This article was all about the effects of sleep deprivation. The effects are: Loss of Memories: Scientists believe when we sleep our mind replays repetitive patterns while we sleep to help information stick. So lack of sleep causes long term memory loss. Anger: Sleep loss makes us focus on negative experiences, misinterpret facial expressions and pick fights. Hallucinations: A   well-rested brain filters noise, light, and smell to separate what matters from what doesn't. When the brain is unable filter the information coming in, it results in chaos. There are many more effects of sleep deprivation on your health, the longer you are sleep deprived the more serious the effects become.  This blog was about the Health part of H.E.A.R.T Man Sleeping

Tech Task - Cheezburger meme

Image
Tech Task Cheezburger Meme  I found Cheezburger very easy to use. It's a really cool way of making memes, I like how there are infinite pages of cats.  Unfortunately I'm not great at making up cool memes so my meme is pretty bad, still enjoyed browsing through pages and pages of cats. This is a great tool and I'm sure I'll use it again in the future. Terrible Meme

Unity Tutorial 05

Image
Unity Tutorial 05 I enjoyed this tutorial much more than last weeks, it was much more experimental. I like playing around with different elements to see what I like and what works well for me. I guess I just enjoy designing worlds. I found the coding harder to understand this week, I normally understand why the code works and why it doesn't but I don't think Jimmy Vegas explained that as well as he has in previous tutorials. I didn't understand why there were bugs and why it still worked even though there were bugs in the coding. I loved testing out different skies, I found some nice skies that I will definitely consider for my game. I like using the animation, it's really simple and creates cool effects. It was surprisingly easy to create a fade in and fade out. I never even thought of a fade in and a fade out for the game but it looks much nicer when you go into player mode. I'm looking forward to designing the inside of the house, as I'm

Game Decisions

Image
Game Decisions Cozy games are games that evokes the fantasy of safety, abundance and softness. A cozy game has no risk, nothing you do will have any dramatic repercussions. There is an abundance of all your basic needs (food, shelter etc.). The player is relaxed as they're in a low-stress environment but may still be highly engaged in the game. People like Cozy games because it allows them to experiment in a world they never could in real life without any danger or risk. When creating a cozy game it is very easy to disrupt a players feeling of coziness due to common game mechanics.  Factors that can ruin coziness: Danger, fear, threat : Any sense of danger triggers responses in the player. Their nervous system kicks, adrenaline floods the body, and memory suffers. Often times, cozy spaces are presented as reprieve or refuge from these dangers.  Responsibility : Responsibility the effort to plan, think, and the execute a plan to resolve something. Being responsible
