Present Final Project

We presented our games today. We showed our game, Tiny Farm to the class and we got a chance to see other peoples work. I looked at Rob Byrne's Project, Chloe and Rebecca's project and Dani's project. Rob's project was a puzzle game. It consisted of three levels. You clicked on each puzzles piece and it moved, you clicked it till you though it was at the right position. There were 8 pieces. After you finished the level you went back to the menu page a clicked on the next level. The colours were nice and calming. The colours are suitable for children with autism. His illustrations were cute little monsters and a small background behind him. He made his game using Unity. Although it was simple it was effective. I really liked the design. Chloe and Rebecca's game was very well designed. They made a multimedia magazine. It included audio interviews and videos. I thought it would've made a cool group project too. They made their magazine on Adobe InDesign. ...

Bloom's Taxonomy  ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Process of Cognitive Learning ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Introduction: Cognitive learning can be achieved through many different techniques. The literary review discusses the different techniques and studies being the idea and process of cognitive learning. There is no one way to achieve cognitive learning. This review identifies the results of different techniques and hypothesis used in studies on students. Discussion: "Cognitive Learning  is a type of  learning  that is active, constructive, and long-lasting. It engages students in the  learning  processes, teaching them to use their brains more effectively to make connections when  learning  new things." So how do we apply this learning method into practice? Bloom's ...

Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography In class we brainstormed what we thought Multimedia was. Below is an image of our brainstorm. Coggle Mind Map My group want to make an e-learning game. I am researching cognitive learning. COGNITIVE LEARNING, COGNITIVE RESPONSE TO PERSUASION, AND ATTITUDE CHANGE. ANTHONY C GREENWALD DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY COLUMBUS, OHIO (1968) It's a common assumption that the effectiveness of persuasive communication is shown through how the information is retained from the audience. Learning persuasion is based on on an analogy between the persuasive communication and informational communication that happens in a lecture. It is measured by the level of information that is retained during the lecture. However persuasive information is measured by the level of acceptance from the information. This paper sets out to establish the legitimacy a conceptive attitude change through persuasive commu...

This week we presented our game to the class. It was great to see other peoples progress in person. This week I helped organise the layout of the pages and I attempted to make the drag and drop for our game. For some reason t didn't work so I still have to figure to why it didn't.  Picture from our game The game is all laid out and clicked from level to level now. We still need to add a graphic that allows kids to know when they've passed the level or need to try again..  We will implement the audio in the next two weeks. I thought the feedback was pretty positive. We still have a lot more to do but it's definitely doable.

This week our meeting with Shaun went well. For Thursday we will have our full functioning game. This week I've been watching videos on Animate CC just to get to grips on how the software works and how to use it. Video for simple animation Only half of this video was actually needed as the designs for the game have already been done. I started to watch a video where the game was made using html5 and java script which I thought could be cool because we already have some knowledge on HTML and JavaScript but as we are making a game for an iPad theres was no point in continuing his tutorials. Plus his voice was hard to follow and he wasn't the best at explaining what he was doing or why.                                        I am currently behind this week so I will be very busy on the game in the next two days to get it finished for Thursday.

MD2Final GDD

This week Nhu Thai and I met up on Wednesday and discussed what we need to do and how we would evenly share out the work. We decided that Nhu would do the Main Menu, the setting page, level page and level 1 and I will be doing levels 2-6. We explored colours for the main menu page using adobe colour. We decided on yellow, blue, red and brown. We wanted use bright colours to engage the users attention. Nhu and I weren't sure how to share our files between Animate CC. We decided to try just sending the file to one another and copy and pasting it into one of the projects. That worked so we we were delighted to know we could easily transfer files. We were given the illustrations this week and are working on implementing them into the levels. We also looked at fonts. We wanted something fun and childlike but it still needs to be readable. After looking through fontspace we decided to go with KidZone and SchoolBell. KidZone was used for the heading and SchoolBell was used fo...

Game Design Document

Image
Game Design Document I'm in a group with Eva Garrett, Nicole Goodman, Robyn Mulhall, Nhu Thai, Marcin Grabicki and Emma Byrne. After doing some research we decided we wanted to make an app for an iPad instead of a game for the laptop we think it would be much more suitable for the game we want to make and for the age group.  We were inspired by Leap-Frog and Animal Crossing.  Kids are attracted to bright colours, we notice colours and begin to distinguish objects based on colour from a very young age so it's important to make sure the game is very bright. We will keep this in mind when designing the game. A lot of kids are visual learners and auditory learners, it's important that they make the association with the sound and word/numbers.  We are making a game for an iPad. The game will be an e-learning game for kids ages four to eight years old.  The game will be a mathematical game based on a farm. The player will be asked a series...

Multimedia Project Research

Image
Project Research  For my Multimedia Project I will be working with Nicole Goodman, Eva Garrett, Robyn Mulhall, Nhu Thai, Emma Byrne and Marcin Grabicki. We plan on making an E-learning game for ages 4-6. It will be a fun way to learn. You will pick the subject, they will be English, Maths, Science etc. Due to the young demographic our game is aimed at it will need to be very visual, because lots of the kids are just starting to learn how to read and write. When I think of E-Learning I think of Leap Frog. Nowadays leap frog are tablets with loads of games to play. It used to be a book that you would put into an interactive notepad and I used to love it. I hope we can make learning as fun as it was on Leap Pad. Leap Pad When researching E-Learning I came across a website about Gamification. Our game would be structural gamification, this means we add elements of a game into learning although there shouldn't be a clear middle and en...

Tech Task, Twine

Image
Tech Task Week 10 I tried twinery.org to make a story. I just copied the number idea but I think it's a cool engine and could be an interesting way to make scenarios up. If you have two great ideas for a story but unsure what one to g with you could mix them up using twinery.org.  When I read the tech task post I assumed it was going to give you an automated story that would inspire and help you come up with a story. I don't think it's that helpful as you have to already have your story planned out a little bit. Story Passage

Games Testing

Image
Games Testing Types of Testing Bug Testing (or Quality Assurance) The purpose of this is to find errors in the game relative to its design. How “Fun” the game is isn't relevant. If the designer says that the game should do one thing but it is doing another, that is a bug and needs to be identified. Focus Testing In a focus test, you bring together players that are part of the target audience’s to determine how well the game serves their needs. Usability Testing In a usability test, players are given specific tasks to accomplish in an attempt to see whether they understand how to control the game.  Balance Testing A fun game can become boring if the game lets a player bypass most of the interesting choices in the game. If only one strategy can win and it is just a matter of which player follows that strategy the best, it is not as interesting as if there are multiple paths to victory.  Fun Testing A game can be usable, balanced and functional and still ...

Alpha I am finding my game difficult to make. Last week my Unity crashed and I had to download it again for this week it is being very slow and laggy though. I will have to use the computers in college to finish my game if it continues.  So far I have set my scene, I used a package and got new trees. I am finding it difficult to get the lighting correct on them though, I have tried different textures and colours but it stays quite dark All the rubbish packages on the Asset Store cost money so I have used a cube instead of the rubbish for now. I put Jimmy Vegas' code for the Gem collector on it. Currently I am just using the first person perspective player. I do intend to make a third person character I just need to do more research on it. Overall I'm struggling to make my game as Unity is slow and keeps crashing when I do manage to get going on it. For the first time in this module I am finding it a challenge to keep up...

Unity Free Tutorials 02

Image
Unity Tutorial This week I decided to branch out from Jimmy Vegas. I knew that I needed a timer in my game so I look up "how to make a timer in unity" this video was one of the shortest ones.  I like Jimmy and he's great at explaining stuff butt his videos can drag on a bit. But this guy stuck to the point and it was very easy to follow. It's a pretty basic timer and so is the score I made but it's fine for the prototype. I liked this tutorial by N3K EN and I will definetly look out for their videos when looking for tutorials.

Game Stories

Image
Game Stories The first reading discussed games being considered an art form. It is a highly debated statement but the conclusion is that some games, if not all are art. Art is an expression of a persons creativity and appreciated for their beauty. Games aren't always considered "beautiful" though but they are an expression of creativity and some have stunning graphics. We are just too distracted by the "fun" of a game to appreciate it's artistic value/beauty. https://learn.canvas.net/courses/3/pages/level-8-introduction-and-readings?module_item_id=44573 https://learn.canvas.net/courses/3/pages/level-8-dot-1-six-layers-of-art?module_item_id=44575 The next reading was all about the story behind a game. For the last few weeks we've been reading about mechanics of games and how to make a game "fun". We hadn't discussed the aesthetic value of the game nor the story line. As humans we love stories and Myth's. For thou...

Week 8 Progress

Image
Progress I am happy with my progress so far. I am a few points behind due to missing a reading in the first few weeks and then I hadn't correctly done the declarations for comments. I discovered this a few weeks back when I had 132 points out of 150 points, II was confused so I looked back and saw I hadn't done declarations correctly. I did extra credit the following week for 6 points and I intend to do extra credit again to get the points that I missed.  I find blogging about what we read and do very useful. I am in a way forced to do something within the deadline and because the days are always the same (bar this week) I have got into a routine. I dread weekends because I leave it all until Sunday and I end up ruining my evening, but I enjoy working on my project and reading other peoples blogs. I do dread having to comments on other peoples blogs I always struggle to meet the word count. I also feel really fake and I'm just kin...

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
Comments and Feedback I think the feedback from other students is great. It's good to hear other peoples opinions on your work. I also just enjoy reading them. Although I enjoy hearing suggestions sometimes they're a bit too late, for example after I finished my GDD I got feedback suggesting I do different things but I had already figured out what I was doing. I found it very useful when choosing my game though because I hadn't set anything in stone yet. Though a lot of what people suggest to me is quite unrealistic to make in the time frame and skill set I have. I think some of my feedback may be useful but like I said before they've already made their decisions so me suggesting that they add more or change things in their game seems a bit harsh to me. I usually just ask questions in my feedback on anything I'm unclear about, I do think this is more helpful than me suggesting they add another ten levels. It means th...

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
Reading and Writing Review I find the reading assignments a bit long winded sometimes and I tend to lose focus the longer I'm reading it unless it's a topic I find interesting. I enjoyed the first few reading we did on growth mindset and time strategies, probably because they were new concepts to me and they were things that I could apply to my everyday life.  I do like learning about the game ones but I find them very long and I tend to zone out on what I'm reading. Some of the writing keeps me more captivated than others. I have learnt from the readings about games and I do think of them when I play games now and what makes a game "fun". I don't really feel like I've learnt anything new form the readings about Games since the first few, I think they've all been pretty similar so I tend to zone out from them. I used to read everything and then write my blog but I found that I forgot a lot of what I read so I started to write notes...
